Welcome to Public School # 5

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Knowledge is acquired through listening, observing, doing, and reading.  At P.S. #5 we know that children learn in different ways.  At our school, your children will be given the opportunity to learn and progress in their own unique way.

Our school has 5 floors with an elevator and over 50 classrooms.  We have over 750 students in about 40 homerooms.  Our grades run K-6, but we also have 3 Alternative Preparatory classes for students who have fallen behind academically, and 2 Passes classes for students recently arrived from Spanish-speaking countries.

Our teachers have worked hard to guide our students through the standardized state testing.  Our students did not do as well as last year, but we are working hard to improve in 2008-2009.  We have tutorial programs before and after school in math, language arts, and science.  We also have incentive programs such as a reading contest, a math relay, and an honor roll assembly, where kids get  such prizes as i-pods Modells gift certificates, pizza parties, portable DVD’s, skate boards, bicycles and toys.

We are very concerned about the health and nutrition of our children.  This is reflected in our physical and health education as well as our menus for breakfast and lunch, and our recess periods.  Our P.T.O. meetings were well attended last year and we hope you will join us in supporting our school.  We announce our school activities through letters sent home to parents, phone calls, and our message board on the side of the school on Hudson Ave., corner 54th St.

My son and daughter received great education from W.N.Y. schools and I know your kids can too.  Please feel free to visit us or to contact my office at (201)553-4080 ext.5084.  Thank you.
