Basic Skills Improvement Program
The West New York School District is dedicated to maximizing all students’ potential for success. In order to address the needs of all its students, the Basic Skills Improvement Program (BSIP) has been established to assist students who need supplemental instruction to improve and maintain proficiency.
What is the Basic Skills Program and how does it help?
The
program provides supplemental instruction to general education
students in Grades K-4 and for English Language Learners in Grades
K-6 in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics and/or ESL. BSIP
teachers work in small groups or cooperatively with the classroom
teacher in a co-teaching situation.
What is taught in the BSIP classroom?
As in the regular classroom, instructional content is aligned with
the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and is consistent
with the research-based content of our Language Arts and Mathematics
series.
Who is eligible to participate?
As a school-wide program, all students are eligible for services
based on their needs. Their needs are established by reviewing
multiple criteria such as state test results (NJASK), district test
results (NJPASS), report card grades and teacher observations.
How are these supplemental services provided?
BSIP provides a combination of small group and/or individualized
instruction during the school day. Services are structured to
supplement and enhance the regular classroom instruction while
reinforcing and expanding upon skill areas.
Who is responsible for providing services to the students?
All instruction
is provided by fully-certified, highly-qualified teachers, many of whom have had
many years of experience as classroom teachers. The BSIP teachers plan and work
with the classroom teachers to provide a coordination of instruction.
How can I meet my child’s BSIP teacher?
As with all teachers in the district, BSIP teachers are available to
meet with parents to discuss their child’s progress. Appointments
may be scheduled during their non-instructional periods. In
addition, BSIP teachers attend all school functions, such as
Back-to-School Night, and are available to meet with parents.
How are children in the program evaluated?
Evaluation takes place on an ongoing basis. Based on updated
information regarding a student’s progress, children enter and/or
exit the program as their needs warrant. Evaluations are documented
through report card grades that are recorded for parents’
information.
How can I get more
information about the program?
In
addition to the school administrator and the student’s BSIP and
classroom teachers, the BSIP supervisor, Michelle Lopez, is also
available to assist you. She may be contacted by email at
mlopez@wnyschools.net or by phone at (201) 553-4000 ext. 2028.
